Keeping myself busy
Wow, it has been a while since my last post. I can’t really say what I’ve been so busy with in the past couple weeks except maybe work.
Personally, I’m glad to have the holiday season behind us for another year. It’s always a stressful time of year for me (I’m sure I’m not alone here), made even more stressful this year because my name came up in the on-call rotation at work. I spent the last two weeks of the year keeping an eye and ear on my pager 24 hours a day to see if it would go off. There were a couple calls in the middle of the night, but compared to on-call rotations I’ve had in the past, it was pretty quiet.
Now that my injuries from my bicycle crash back in October have healed, I’ve been getting back to my normal routine of exercise. I havent’t (yet) done any skiing this year though. Instead, I’ve been content to ride the indoor bicycle trainer, hike in the foothills of the mountains, and take the dogs for long walks in the nearby off-leash park. Actually, I’ve been doing a lot of walking this winter — more than in years past. I’ve done so much walking that I’ve walked home from work (a 6-8 mile walk) five or six times. It takes one and a half to two hours depending on the route I take.
Another thing I’ve been doing this winter is shopping for a new camera. One of the things that I enjoyed more than expected on The Dream Tour was taking pictures during our travels each day. I had a small, easy to carry point-and-shoot camera with me on the tour and it was very nice. I still have it and I still like it, but I decided if I enjoyed the photography so much, maybe I should upgrade to a digital single-lens-reflex (SLR) camera. So, after much research and deliberation, I decided to purchase a Nikon D40, an entry-level digital SLR. I had a film SLR years ago and did some photography with it back in the 80’s. In fact, I took that SLR on my first two self-supported bicycle tours. I still have that SLR, but it was made by Yashica and Yashica doesn’t even make cameras anymore so I couldn’t get lenses for it except maybe by chance on eBay or at a garage sale.
I should be receiving the new camera in the next week or so. I’ll be sure to post some of them on the web site.
