Finally!
Yesterday, I decided to go for a bike ride, despite unseasonably cold and windy conditions. I started out on my usual route. Down the driveway, a right onto 2750 East, another right onto 3185 South and then a third right onto 2700 East, headed north. This stretch of road has a lot of memories for me because it was about six months ago on this stretch of road that I had an unfortunate encounter with a manhole cover.
Yes, it was back on October 28, 2006 that I headed out on a bike ride just like I did yesterday. On that day, however, I was adjusting the rear view mirror attached to my sunglasses as I passed the manhole cover. Usually a manhole cover is no big concern for a cyclist, but this manhole cover was recessed about three or four inches below the surface of the road. I ended up crashing and breaking a rib, my left forearm, and a finger in my left hand. I wrote all about this experience back on October 28, 2006 in an entry titled A day of ironies.
So, yesterday, as I was riding on the same stretch of road, I noticed that they finally are working on fixing this dangerous manhole cover. I have to give credit to my neighbor, Paul Proctor, for making this happen. He knew the right “street people” (his words, not mine) to call get some action. In addition to the one I’m very familiar with, they were repairing other manhole covers and miscellaneous road damage on 2700 East. Thank you!
Here are before and after photos of this manhole cover:
