August 5: Last day in Sitka
Yesterday (August 4), I did a little exploring of Sitka on foot along with all the other tourists, most of whom have come ashore off of one of two cruise ships parked just offshore yesterday. Sitka doesn’t have a dock large enough to accomodate most cruise ships, so all the cuising tourists come into Sitka aboard a smaller ship called a tender
While I was exploring Sitka, I was also tending to a number of errands I need to do before leaving on the ferry today. I did laundry, I sent a package home containing miscellaneous stuff — mostly receipts and paperwork — I had collected over the last couple of weeks, and searched for a functioning printer to print out my notes for a presentation I gave yesterday evening.
It was a pretty good turnout for the presentation too. About fifteen people and a mix of cyclists, people with diabetes, and friends of my friend Dave Nevins. Dave had organized the event. I’ve done quite a few presentations on the 10,000 mile, 48 state tour I did back in 2006 and for a town of 8500 people, I think it was an excellent turnout. Dave did a great job promoting it.
Afterward, I talked for a while with some of the attendees and then Dave and I had a late dinner with two of them, Preston and Mary. Mary is an insulin pump wearer and is shopping for a new insulin pump. As you might expect, she had many questions about my experiences touring with my OmniPod insulin pump and my Dexcom continuous glucose monitor. I hope I was able to answer them all.
This morning, I’m packing up and heading to the ferry terminal for my ferry trip back to Bellingham. I won’t have internet access during that trip so my next posting probably will be on August 8 at the earliest when I arrive in Bellingham.
