Bike riding around Eugene
Yesterday, I took a ride around the cities of Eugene and Springfield. I mean that literally too. With the help of the Eugene Bicycle Map and the Springfield Bicycle Map, I rode around the circumference of the two cities by making a point of riding as close as possible to the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) of each city. It ended up being a seven-hour, 67-mile ride. Most of it was flat or rolling hills, but the south part of the city near Spencer Butte was definitely challenging. On my cyclometer, I recorded eleven short climbs in excess of 12% grade through residential areas and two of those climbs were at 20% grade.
I don’t think this is a ride I could have done in Salt Lake City. Firstly, I don’t think there is a defined UGB in Salt Lake City or any of its surrounding cities. Most importantly though, it would be a ride of well over a hundred miles, maybe closer to 150, and through more mountainous terrain than what I encountered yesterday in Eugene.
